IMPHAL, Sep 8 : Against the alleged killing spree unleashed under the rule of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, the All Manipur Students' Union has decided to launch indefinite class boycott of schools all over the State from tomorrow.
A press release issued by the student body asserted that the situation has come to such a pass that any one can fall victim to a fake encounter, stray bullets, any time, anywhere. There have been several instances when innocent persons were killed right in front of their family. In other cases, many people picked up from their own homes/localities by security personnel have been branded UG cadres after killing them at some other places in fake encounters.
Many students have already fallen victims to such fake encounters and extra-judicial killings, it alleged.
When death is hanging over the head of all the people including students, it has become a big question whether the student community should continue with their studies or join the people’s movement.
Rather than waiting to be killed in fake encounters, the student community too will join the mass movement for a secure future.
Since O Ibobi assumed the office of Chief Minister in 2002, thousands of people have been killed in fake encounters, it alleged.
The July 23 fake encounter was only the sparking point of the people’s fury.
Instead of paying any heed to the people’s demand for his resignation, punishment of guilty commandos as well as police officers who tried to cover up the killings, unconditional release of the Apunba Lup activists, repeal of AFSPA etc, Chief Minister seemed more interested in recruitment of additional police forces. By deploying commandos in both uniform and civilian fatigue at the schools, the Government has been forbidding students from taking out any form of democratic movement against the extra-judicial killings, the AMSU said. For all the fake encounters and extra-judicial killings perpetrated under the immunity guaranteed by AFSPA, Chief Minister Ibobi should be held responsible. Saying that it would be launching various democratic movements under the leadership of the Apunba, the student body called indefinite class boycott in schools all over the state from tomorrow.

Learning from the historic experience about the need for a students' body at the State level, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) was established the next day.

Since the day AMSU was established, the student body has been taking leading roles in different issues and it would continue the same legacy in future, Alamgir said.

Addressing the function, Hamom Nabachandra stressed that peaceful atmosphere conducive to wholesome education were the basic prerequisites to take Manipur on a progressive path.

However, students of Manipur were being denied the opportunity to pursue education with peace of mind.

The demand raised by different sections of the society to made education a free zone were yet to yield any substantive result, he noted.

Even though it is the fag end of August, students have been unable to pursue their studies systematically since the July 23 Khwairamband Keithel killings.

COHSEM as well as BSEM have not been able to work regularly, Nabachandra said.

Calling upon all to make education a free zone and not to disturb academic atmosphere so that academic calendar can be stringently, Nabachandra observed that AMSU, being the oldest student body of Manipur, should take more pro-active role to build up a united strength of all the students of Manipur.

The student bodies should also make in-depth analysis and identify the issues in which they should get involved or not, he added.

Lairenlakpam Rajmohon also stressed on the need to make education a free zone.

The inability to let student pursue their studies without any disturbance is a lost for the whole society, he said.

Saying that AMSU has been in the forefront in different issues since it took its root on the soil of Manipur, Jamesbond cited the movement for statehood, establishment of Manipur University, RIMS, inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule and others.

AMSU cannot accept the Government's intimation to shift away its present office without giving any reason.

If it is reasonable, AMSU would raise no objection, he said.

Today's foundation day function was also attended by former AMSU presidents and functionaries.

Imphal, May 4 : The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) Thoubal District Committee under the AMSU head quarter has organized a convention at its office premises for the appointment of new office bearer for the session of 2009-11 of the committee today.

President of NIPCO and Vice President of UCM, Y Nabachandra and Secretary General AMSU head quarter, Alamgir graced the function as chief guest and president respectively while Secretary UPACO, W Jotinkumar, S Somendrajit and Advisor AMSU Thoubal District Committee, Moirangthem Madhumangol took part as guests of honor at the function.

The assembly elected Yumkhaibam Momocha, Nahakpam Priyo, Leishangtehm Subhachandra and Bogimayum Wahidur Rahman as the new President, Vice President, General Secretary and Publicity Secretary of the AMSU Thoubal District Committee stated a press release issued by Networking and Co-ordination Secretary of AMSU H/Q, W Janmenjoy Meetei.

Imphal, April 30 : Student organisations AMSU and DESAM have alleged that certain individuals who manipulated manipur University Students' union election process to their advantage and to position themselves as MUSU functionaries had been issuing misleading statements through the media.

These individuals posing as the authorities and occupying Students' Home in the varsity should immediately cease making theatrical comments, said a joint statement of AMSU and DESAM while asking the Vice Chancellor, Registrar and authorities concerned of the varsity to do the needful as such a sordid precedent if re-enacted by other students in the future is certain to demean the highest institute of learning in the State.

Contending that the MUSU election needs to be reviewed and revoked and until an arrangement is made no individual or group should indulge in activities that would vitiate the academic atmosphere, the joint statement also stressed that the VC, Registrar and other MU officials consider the issue with all seriousness.

Opining that statements of clarification issued through the media by those individuals who had erred or acted to serve interest of the guilty ones testify that the MUSU election was carried out in contravention of prescribed norms, the joint statements issued by presidents LC Santosh and I Jamesbond Mangang of the DESAM and AMSU respectively further affirmed that the MU authorities ordering enquiry on the matter underscores that conspiracy theory in the MUSU presidential election could not be ruled out.

Under such a circumstance including the MU declaration that recognition had not been accorded to the new MUSU office bearers, it would be foolhardy for all concerned to assume that the MUSU election had been conducted in the proper way, they cautioned.

therefore till the matter has been resolved amicably MU authorities should initiate all possible measures to prevent entry of unauthorised person/s to the Students' Home or publish statements in the name of MUSU so as to preserve sanctity of the varsity, the joint statement said.

While demanding that the students' Home be declared a 'restricted area', AMSU-DESAM also called upon the MU authorities to strive for solving the matter at the earliest so as to present the only Central University of the State in a palatable manner ahead of the arrival of the Chancellor Prof PN Shrivastava tomorrow.

Imphal, Mar 22 : The drive of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) for cancellation of private examination centres which includes the Komlathabi High School of Chandel district has irked the Naga Students’ Union, Chandel (NSUC).

The NSUC terms the move of AMSU-DESAM as intrusion into others` jurisdiction in the name of quality education.

The decision of the AMSU-DESAM was published in the March 20th issue of Manipur based local papers wherein the students` bodies asserted that certain private centres were using unfair means in the ongoing Classes X and XII examinations conducted by the state board and council respectively. The NSUC also rubbishes the allegation of AMSU-DESAM that teachers were helping the students in practicing unfair means.

In this regard, the NSUC stated that it has issued instructions to the OC/Invigilators, authorities of the concerned centres and that it was keeping a close vigil for the smooth conduct of the ensuing exams.

The students` body of Chandel district further asserted that the Komlathabi centre falls under its operational area and that any good suggestion from any organisation or individual was much appreciated. It however stated that the move to cancel the centre was unfortunate and uncalled for and asserted that the allegation of invigilators and authorities encouraging the students for mass copying was totally baseless and false. Rather, the NSUC and the invigilators have kept strict vigil everyday and the statement of the AMSU-DESAM is uncalled for and baseless, it added.

While appreciating the two students` bodies for taking up steps in ensuing quality education in the state, the NSUC urged the AMSU-DESAM to refrain from such intrusion in other jurisdiction in the name of quality education.

In this regard, the NSUC asserted that in the event of action being initiated by the board and council of the state against the centre, the NSUC and its federating units will take it as a bias attitude of government for which the government will be held responsible for any untoward incident or accident arising out of it.

IMPHAL, Mar 20 : The All Manipur Sudents Union, AMSU, alleged question paper leakage in the ongoing Class XII examinations and also charged the complicity of top officials of the education department.

In a press conference at the AMSU headquarters, publicity secretary of the students body, L Ranendra Singh said that the leaked question was found from a student of Room No.7 of Ideal Girls College who had with him a question paper for mathematics which was to be held on March 20.

He further said most of the parts of the English question paper exam for which was held on February 27 last month was found similar to the English question paper of the half yearly exam conducted by the Ibotonsana Higher Secondery School and for this reason they had even lodged a case in this regard.

He demanded the maths exam be postponed and said that the controller of Exam was an irresponsible officer and asked the concern officers and minister to take action.

He also demanded a probe to find out other persons complicit in the unfolding scandal.

He further said that if the government did not act and rectify things, it would take steps in this regard.

Churachandpur, March 20 : Asserting that use of unfair means has been detected in some of the private centre of the ongoing class X and XII examination being conducted by the Manipur Board and the Council respectively, AMSU and DESAM have alleged that invigilators on duty in the examination centres of these private centres instead of stopping are encouraging the students in their malpractices.

Talking to mediapersons after conducting a tour of some private examination centres today, education secretary of DESAM A Thoithoi and secretary organisation of AMSU W Jamenjoy maintained that allotment of private centres has derailed the collective efforts being made by various student bodies and other concerned organisations to ensure free and fair conduct of the examination.

So DESAM and AMSU would take up the issue with the Board and the Council to cancel allotment of private centres.

Revealing the report of their finding, the student leaders informed that use of unfair means in the examination have been detected in private centres like Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School (Thoubal), Komlathabi High School (Chandel) and the private centre at Khangabok.

Among the students appearing in class XII examination from Chaoyaima Higher Secondary School, students with roll no.10991 in room no.11, roll no.10887 and roll no.10886 in room number 8 and roll no.10865 and roll no.10858 in room no.7 were found using unfair means.

At Komlathabi High Schol whre examination for class X is being held, student with rool number 20634 in room no.1, roll number 20720 in room no.3 and student with rool number 6767, 6666 and 6668 in the Khangabok private centre were not notly using unfair means but the invigilators were also giving free hands to the students.

DESAM and AMSU have also announced restriction on use of mobile phones by students upto class XII with effect from today and said any student who were found using mobile phones in defiance of the restriction imposed should be ready to bear with the consequences.
