May 22 : Behind every success story, they say, is a woman. Shillong, in fact, discovered five women — all principals of different schools — today who have emerged the “real heroes” in this year’s Indian Certificate of Secondary Education examinations with all schools in the Meghalaya capital achieving cent per cent success.

All the five schools in Shillong, which registered cent per cent results in the ICSE examinations, are headed by women principals.

Bratatee Roy of the government-run all girls Pine Mount School led the city’s great show in the ICSE exams, the results of which were declared yesterday. Bratatee secured 93.8 per cent marks. Among the 91 girls who appeared in the examinations, six girls secured above 92 per cent.

“We have been getting cent percent results for the last five years and the highest individual marks used to vary from 95 to 93 per cent”, E. Syiem, the principal of the school, said.

The school had also secured cent per cent results in the Indian School Certificate (Class XII) examinations where Madhumita Bhattacharjee secured the highest 92 per cent marks in the arts stream and Amanda Dkhar (79.75 per cent) in the science stream.

The all girls Loreto Convent School also secured cent percent success in the ICSE examinations with Alexandra Mawlong securing 92 per cent followed by G. Kaur (91.6 per cent), S. Singhania (90.6 per cent), and Sangamitra (90.2 per cent).

Catherine Nongrum, the principal of Loreto Convent School, said while 29 girls got 80 per cent and above marks, 26 students got 70 per cent and above, 23 (60 per cent) and three others secured 50 per cent and above.

Trevor Syiem, the principal of St Edmund’s School for boys, said the school besides securing cent per cent results had a student Adveeth Deb excelling by securing an aggregate of 96 per cent marks.

“For the last three years, we have been getting cent per cent results,” she said, adding that the hard work of the teachers and the students helped achieve good results.

In the Shillong Public School for boys, Eric Chesrang Sangma secured 88 per cent . Of the 28 boys who appeared for the examinations, 11 boys got first division and the rest secured second division.

The principal of the school, T.M. Pyngrope, said for the past three years, cent per cent results was recorded.

The Police Public School, a co-education institution at Mawlai Mawroh in Shillong also secured cent per cent results. The principal, Rosana Lyngdoh, said all the 21 students passed in the first division and Chandan Kumar Jha, 86 per cent marks emerged the topper.

Besides the city schools, the Jowai Public School and Tura Public School also registered cent per cent results.

In fact, it was another woman-led school at Jorhat in Assam, the Carmel School, where Shailesh Agarwal topped the ICSE examinations in Assam securing 98 per cent marks.

“It is one of the best results of our school ever,” said Sister Dipika, the principal of the school.

One student of Assam Valley School at Balipara in Sonitpur district was among the all-India toppers in the commerce stream of ISC examination 2009.

Derek Mountford, the headmaster of the school, said Gaurav Agarwal secured an aggregate of 98 per cent marks in the commerce stream of ISC examination 2009.

Sanskriti The Gurukul in Guwahati also registered 100 per cent pass percentage both in ISC and ICSE examinations.

While Sucheta Rajkhowa of the school secured 92.75 per cent marks in the ISC examination, Shivani Jain got 89.6 per cent marks in ICSE examination.
