New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday rapped the Jawaharlal Nehru University for evicting three students for their alleged involvement in a hostel scuffle, when an enquiry was still pending. Justice S. Ravinder Bhat, who directed the university to wrap up the enquiry within a week, asked the authorities to re-admit them in the hostel with immediate effect.
The court also said the hostel authorities cannot keep the students out till the completion of the enquiry.
The three students Santosh Kumar Pathak, Ashutosh Singh and Shashi Shankar Singh alleged that the senior warden of Lohit Hostel had illegally passed an order asking them to vacate the hostel.
Advocate Monica Arora, appearing for the students, said that on March 17 there was a scuffle between two factions during a student general body meeting.
Counsel alleged that the brawl started when some "unruly" students, including university union president, in a drunken state started using abusive and filthy language against the hostel residents.
Imphal, Mar 22 : The drive of the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and the Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) for cancellation of private examination centres which includes the Komlathabi High School of Chandel district has irked the Naga Students’ Union, Chandel (NSUC).
The NSUC terms the move of AMSU-DESAM as intrusion into others` jurisdiction in the name of quality education.
The decision of the AMSU-DESAM was published in the March 20th issue of Manipur based local papers wherein the students` bodies asserted that certain private centres were using unfair means in the ongoing Classes X and XII examinations conducted by the state board and council respectively. The NSUC also rubbishes the allegation of AMSU-DESAM that teachers were helping the students in practicing unfair means.
In this regard, the NSUC stated that it has issued instructions to the OC/Invigilators, authorities of the concerned centres and that it was keeping a close vigil for the smooth conduct of the ensuing exams.
The students` body of Chandel district further asserted that the Komlathabi centre falls under its operational area and that any good suggestion from any organisation or individual was much appreciated. It however stated that the move to cancel the centre was unfortunate and uncalled for and asserted that the allegation of invigilators and authorities encouraging the students for mass copying was totally baseless and false. Rather, the NSUC and the invigilators have kept strict vigil everyday and the statement of the AMSU-DESAM is uncalled for and baseless, it added.
While appreciating the two students` bodies for taking up steps in ensuing quality education in the state, the NSUC urged the AMSU-DESAM to refrain from such intrusion in other jurisdiction in the name of quality education.
In this regard, the NSUC asserted that in the event of action being initiated by the board and council of the state against the centre, the NSUC and its federating units will take it as a bias attitude of government for which the government will be held responsible for any untoward incident or accident arising out of it.

GUWAHATI, March 18 : The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today demanded the State Government to institute a probe into the alleged gross irregularities in the printing of the question papers of High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary examination held in the current session.
The students’ body pointed out that the students appearing in the HSLC exams under the Board of Secondary Education of Assam (SEBA) had to appear for 102 marks in Assamese instead of 100, while in the HS exams the candidates were put against questions outside their respective courses in subjects like Biology, English and Advance Assamese.
“This is sheer injustice done against the students and the authorities responsible for it should be punished,” AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya demanded while speaking to reporters here today.
Dr Bhattacharya insisted that the State Government must sort out a mechanism to make up for the injustice done to the candidates who appeared in the examination.
“This is not the first time that such gross irregularities have cropped up. We, in the recent years, have seen a series of such instances, which has emerged as threat to the future of the students,” he asserted, adding that the students’ body in view of the gross irregularities would stage protest rally in all district headquarters of the State and also submit a memorandum to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner.
AASU general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi while endorsing the need for streamlining the examination system said that the recurring goof ups made by the SEBA and the Council proves their inefficiency and lack of transparency.
“In spite of getting all the facilities from the Government, one fail to understand as to where lies the problem,” AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai stated.
The AASU will also observe March 18 as black day against the merciless attack on the teachers, who were demanding provincialisation of schools, on Monday and would also move the Human Rights Commission against the ‘atrocity’.
Meanwhile, a team of AASU would meet the commission constituted to inquire into the alleged scam in the re-examination system of HSLC.
The students’ body had earlier alleged that there exists gross anomalies in the entire system of re-examination and it had proves to establish its allegation.
It asked underground outfits not to interfere in the investigations being carried out by the state vigilance commission.

ATTSA stand will not affect poll outcome: Handique |
Dibrugarh, March 15 : The Union minister of state for chemicals and fertilisers, B.K. Handique, and the former Dibrugarh MP, Paban Singh Ghatowar, today said the Assam Tea Tribes Students Association would not be a cause of concern for the Congress in the ensuing polls. Their comment comes after the influential association threatened to stage protests against the Congress for its alleged failure on all fronts and particularly for the stunted development of the tea community. The two important Congress candidates from the tea belt, however, virtually laughed off the threat. Addressing the media at the Dibrugarh District Congress Committee office this morning, Handique, the party’s candidate from Jorhat parliamentary constituency and Ghatowar, the candidate from Dibrugarh, said the ATTSA threat would not affect the Congress’ prospects. The ATTSA had issued similar threats during the panchayat elections too and many people thought it would have an impact, particularly after the Beltola episode, Handique said. “However, it proved to be mere words. Actually, organisations like ATTSA do not have any base at the grassroots level. This is why no one takes them seriously,” he added. after formally announcing his candidature. Ghatowar said organisations like ATTSA try to raise a hue and cry only during the elections because they have political intentions. “They are not concerned about the well being of the tea community. If they are, they should come forward and discuss their problems, merely issuing so-called threats through certain newspapers or channels would not serve any purpose,” Ghatowar added. Handique, however, said the party if voted to power once again would amend certain laws like the Plantation Labour Act, 1951, Payment of Bonus Act, 1965 and Industrial Dispute Act, 1948 among others. On the ailing Assam Tea Corporation Limited (ATCL) gardens, the Union minister said the government is looking for good buyers to sell these gardens off as a whole. “Though there are some responses, they are not willing to shoulder the huge liabilities of ATCL. We will have to sort out these issues. I am happy that the state government has adopted schemes to better health care facilities in the tea gardens through the National Rural Health Mission. A Rs 150-crore fund has already been sanctioned for the tea estates, and more steps will soon be taken,” Hondique said. Both the Dibrugarh and Jorhat parliamentary constituencies however, have a sizeable tea voter’s population and it would be interesting to watch what the ATTSA does after today’s development. |

JORHAT, Mar 2 : The Jorhat regional unit of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) alleged that the director in-charge of the Cost Of Cultivation Centre (COCC) and the Agro Economy Research Centre (AERC), under Asom Agriculture University (AAU), have allegedly appointed some persons in some vacant posts by violating the rules and regulations of the recruitment procedure. It also alleged that the directors of the COCC and AERC had not published any advertisements through newspapers in this regard.
The students’ body in a press release alleged, at a time when the unemployment problem has been proved to be a burning issue in the State, the director of the AERC has appointed some retired employees in contractual basis. Apart from this, the director himself has been holding three major posts in the AAU.
Demanding the immediate dismissal of the alleged appointment, the students’ body urged the district administration as well as the State Government to appoint permanent directors in the said centres to prevent such anomalies.
Moreover, the director has allegedly deputed a number of contractors of his own choice to work on some development schemes for his self interest. Since these schemes are of the Central Government, it needs to be tendered openly, but the director did not do so, they added.
Demanding an immediate action Sumanta Hazarika and Bhargab Borthakur, president and secretary respectively of JRSU, have sent memoranda to the Vice Chancellor of AAU and the chairman of the Advisory Body of COCC and AERC under AAU in this regard. They also warned the authorities concerned of agitation if they fail to act against such mispractice.
When the director contacted over telephone in this regard, he refuted the allegations levelled against him and had not violated any guidelines prescribed by AAU.
