Imphal, March 15 : The residents of Nganapithong in Imphal West today blocked the road leading to Khagempalli and staged a sit-in, demanding punishment to police personnel who allegedly assaulted a college lecturer yesterday.
The lecturer, O. Ajit Singh, teaches at DM College of Sciences. Reports said a team of Imphal West police personnel called Singh, who was watching Yaoshang sports in his locality last evening.
The police hit Singh, leading to critical injuries in his head and chest. It is not yet known what provoked the police to do so.
After the police left, Singh was rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). When his condition worsened, he was referred to the Shija Hospital and Research Institute.
Infuriated over the incident, the residents formed a joint action committee and demanded the suspension of the errant police personnel.
The committee warned that they would intensify the agitation if justice was not done.
Education minister L. Jayantakumar Singh met the committee’s leaders and assured them that that the matter would be placed before the chief minister.
He added that the guilty personnel would be booked.
